Google Moon

Google has placed the images of some of the lunar surface in a Google Maps like interface - showing the Apollo moon landing sites.

Don't forget to zoom in to the max! :)

Yahoo Mail - 1 GB

I logged into my Yahoo mail account (after a long time) and noticed that they have silently increased my mailbox size to 1 GB! Competion is good ;-) Meanwhile my Gmail mailbox size is 2373 GB. My Hotmail account is still struck at 250 MB - and is very much neglected at the moment.

Java Name Change

Future versions of Java will bear a slightly different name.

The "2" in the full name will be dropped. So, now they would be -

JavaTM Platform, Standard Edition

JavaTM Platform, Enterprise Edition

JavaTM Platform, Micro Edition

The short names will spell out Java -

J2SETM is now JavaTM SE

J2EETM is now JavaTM EE

J2METM is now JavaTM ME

The version numbers will be single digit - so it would be 6 not 6.0.

So Mustang Standard edition will be named "Java SE 6".

Maps APIs

Both Google and Yahoo have announced their Maps API.

"The Google Maps API lets web developers put Google Maps on their own sites."

The Google Maps API lets developers embed Google Maps in their own web pages with JavaScript. You can add overlays to the map (including markers and polylines) and display shadowed "info windows" just like Google Maps. Google retains the right to put advertising on the map in the future.

"Yahoo! now offers an open XML API. It's free, stable, and backward compatible."

The Yahoo API accepts street addresses in addition to lat/long inputs. They also provide space on the page for developer attribution, and links to go back to the referral page.

World Heritage Sites

Talking of World Heritage sites, I was reading through the list to check how many of these I had covered. We love travelling and it would be cool to visit all of them! :)

"788 properties are now inscribed on the World Heritage List with 611 cultural, 154 natural and 23 mixed properties in 134 States Parties.

The list will be updated on July 2005, so lets wait and see if any more sites will be added.

I've visited 14 of these sites - so 774 more to go!

India

United States of America

Though I travelled to Québec, I didn't visit the Historic District of Québec.

According to my count of the links in the site - there are 803 sites!

The following were the countries with the most number of sites -

Italy - 39
Spain - 38
China - 30
Germany - 30
France - 29
India - 26
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - 26
Mexico - 24
Russian Federation - 21
United States of America - 20
Brazil - 17
Australia - 16
Greece - 16
Canada - 13
Portugal - 13
Sweden - 13
Czech Republic - 12
Japan - 12
Poland - 12

Google Maps - Global

Google Maps Satellite Imagery has gone global - though they still don't have detailed images for all locations, and don't have the maps for locations other than US and UK.

Today, probably a fortnight after I checked out China & India on Google maps, it was reported on Slashdot. People shared some intersting links -

St. Peter in Rome
Buckingham Palace
Arc de Triomphe
Water reservoirs in Sahara
Giza Pyramids
Pompei
Baghdad Parade Grounds
Crater of Vesuvius
Mt. St. Helens
Maree Man

The Google Maps for World Heritage Sites lists out all 788 of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The Google Sightseeing/ site seems to be still active.

Article with good information on the comapnies that Google has bought so far ... and speculation on what they could be buying next.
